Meet the artists - Alan Dilly

Alan Dilly

I am lucky that 99% of my working life has also been my passion, the ARTS, both as a practitioner and teacher.
Having studied art at Colleges in Essex and Exeter, I went on to teach art in schools in Buckinghamshire for thirty years as well as continue my own work in a variety of media.

I have never settled on one medium but have enjoyed exploring my ideas through any media that was appropriate to the theme.
I have been fortunate in working with some excellent artists along the way who have introduced me to new skills necessary to fulfil my ambitions.
As you will see my portfolio includes Painting, Sculpture in most materials, Textiles, Glass, Printmaking and Photography.

I recently returned to Devon and have established a new studio in North Tawton.
I am currently restoring a great workshop. This will allow me to develop my sculpture and other larger mixed media work.
In the meantime I continue to paint & create embroidered textile works.

Meeting the artists - introduction

Meet the artists

Over the next few weeks I will be using the blog to highlight the work of the 9 artists participating in

                   Artists Outside The Classroom
                   July 28th - August 2nd 2014
                   @ 54 The Gallery
                    Shepherds Market
                    Mayfair

We hope this blog will provide an inspiring glimpse behind the scenes as we prepare for our Mayfair debut.
We will showcase some of the work you will see at the exhibition but also introduce you to the ideas and techniques used by each of the artists.
It's always fascinating to get in to the studio with makers and see where the 'creative bit' happens. We will try to document the evolution of individual pieces, show you round our workshops and discuss our ideas.
Of course it will be great to see you at the gallery in July.
In the meantime ...........
please would you pass details of our blog on to friends & colleagues.

Artists Outside the Classroom

Makers who Teach

Teaching Arts & continuing to Create

It has often surprised me how many people spend years studying, exploring, experimenting and creating art, craft & design.
They gain their degrees, train as teachers then STOP MAKING!
In the 25 years I have been involved in secondary education it has often been one of the first thing I want to know about an art or design teacher - do you still create?
I know, as teachers, we make endless prototypes, plan creative lessons and generate hundreds of new pieces of work each year through our support of students and pupils but ... do you make artwork outside the classroom?

In July 2014 a small group of artists, designers and craft makers (who also teach) will hold an exhibition of their work at

54 THE GALLERY,
SHEPHERDS MARKET,
MAYFAIR
LONDON

We hope you can make a date to visit.
Monday 28th July - Saturday 2nd August 2014

This blog will hopefully chart our progress and give you a taste of what to expect when you come to the show.

We look forwards meeting you in July
